I lamented to Casper. I told him I was apologetic about the fact I was lamenting to him, but in reality I wasn’t, not really. He seemed to be listening, his expressions at least accurate for what I was telling him as he continued to eat through his ice cream. Mine was melting in my hand. I licked up the melted ice cream.

“It’s shitty,” he said. I looked at him over my ice cream. “All of it. Every bit of it. I mean, yes I want more details about the fact you were sleeping with a teacher. Like, what the fuck, but Cassidy, this isn’t the end of the world,” he said.

I shook my head. “It could be for Finn.”

“Devon sounds like someone who’s all mouth and no trousers.”

“What do mean?”

“I mean, I don’t think he’s going to tell anyone. I mean, sure, he told Kennedy, but he’s your brother and if I’ve been listening to the story correctly, his ex. If he wanted to impact you, he’d have gone straight to the principal.” He paused. “At least I would’ve.”

I rose my eyebrow at him. He laughed.

“I get that all this is shitty, Cassidy, but don’t let it ruin your week…” He looked at me. “Today.”

I nodded softly.

“And in regards to the money,” he continued, “welcome to my world, Queen.”

“Sorry.” I winced; he shook his head, amused as he finished his cone.

“Don’t be. We’ll think of this like an opportunity for a life lesson. You’re going to spend the day like poor little me,” he relished in saying.

I frowned at him then shook my head. “What do you mean?”

“We’re going to survive the day on twenty pounds.”

“Impossible,” I said in a breath. “There wouldn’t even be enough to drink with later.”

“That’s why we work, sweetie,” he said, then lifted my chin with his finger. “And I know princesses like you haven’t worked a day in your life. Let’s get our hands dirty.”

I crinkled my nose at him. He laughed, taking my hand in his.

“Not literally,” he assured me, lifting my hand up between us. “We’re not going to ruin those nails. Nuh-huh.”

“I am developing feelings for you,” I told him. He laughed.

“First thing we’re going to do is lunch.” He nodded to me. I frowned but silently agreed. “And you’re going to meet my friends.”

“I’m… what?”

“You need to spend this afternoon around people who don’t know you,” he said, lifting his first finger, “and my friends are the best.”

“We’ve all said that about our best friends.”

“Yeah, but mine are actually the best,” he said. I laughed as he got his phone out, still pulling me forward as he sent a text.

He stopped when his phone dinged in his hand, changing our direction.

“So, one of the musical theatre modules is that they have to audition and perform in a musical.”

“Oh my god,” I moaned. “Why did I go to Ravenwood?”

“Don’t worry, I’ve been asking myself that question since I met you,” he said, smiling. “Basically we have a big lunch because it’s…”

“Two-show day.
